The East Brunswick Community Garden was founded in 2009 and has rapidly achieved overwhelming success. It is located near the municipal building on township open space property.
The day-to-day aspects of the garden are run by committees of gardeners including a Social committee, Shared Garden committee, Newsletter committee, General Garden committee and a Website committee. While our non-profit, the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission is in charge of the garden, the gardeners are running the day-to-day operations. Our garden has rapidly become a place for a wonderful, shared social outdoor experience that is much more than just a group of individual plots for growing vegetables.
We also are giving back to the community and believe that this is an incredibly important part of a community garden. We have two plots that are being grown specifically for our Municipal Senior Center and the produce is being used in their meals (they prepare about 40 daily meals for our Senior residents). We also challenged all of our gardeners to donate fresh produce to the Senior Center.
We also have formed a unique partnership with a "sister garden" in East Brunswick, Australia (who would have known that there would be two East Brunswick’s in the world, both developing community gardens and separated by more than 10,000 miles!) and we are developing cross-world connections between our gardens and gardeners. We have already signed a joint resolution outlining our shared ideals.
Please visit us when you are in NJ, we would love to show you around our garden and welcome you into our community of gardeners.
